TheTackGuide visits
Europe’s top saddlemakers to provide
saddle buyers around the world with unbiased advice about Europe‘s best
saddlemakers. We have visited many English saddlemaking workshops in
our quest, and have recently visited an established family saddle making
company in Walsall, England who we now believe make the very best dressage
saddles currently available anywhere in the world, plus some superb
close-contact jumping saddles…CARDANEL SADDLES LTD
Walsall is a
busy town in the heart of the bustling West Midlands area of the UK, which
has for centuries been the heart of leathergoods and saddle manufacture,
near to the leather tanning areas in the nearby ‘Black Country’ of
England, located close to natural water sources essential for the leather
tanning process. The particular Saddlemaker we are featuring
has been established as a family concern in Walsall for many years, and
are proud to be members of the Master Saddlers Federation.
On entering
their small, bustling workshops, you are immediately aware of the noise
and buzz of enthusiasm of a team of dedicated master craftsmen and
craftswomen, all carrying out diverse skills required in the saddlemaking
process, under the guidance of the Lowbridge brothers. Cardanel saddles
are hand-made in the traditional way…on the bench… to a meticulous
standard, using the very best European leathers all carefully selected by
Carl Lowbridge, one of the MDs of the business, with every saddle getting
a final check-over also by Carl, as a matter of course, thus ensuring
optimum quality control. Although their saddles have always been
made predominantly for export, the name CARDANEL is maybe not as well
known in the global riding markets as some other English saddle brands,
but Cardanel saddles are in great demand worldwide, as most are branded
for some very well-known saddlery names in Europe and in the USA.

number of their very popular models made in the Cardanel workshops.

As
a qualified English Saddler I have been frustrated over the years by
rider's use of tubular steel saddle stands and saddle racks, which
have become almost universal in the UK. Use of this type of saddle stand can
easily cause deformation of the panel of a saddle,
especially when more than one saddle is stacked on the stand
or rack, when extra weight is introduced. The marks
caused,
especially on high quality saddles which use soft,
panel hide combined with pure wool flocking, are
difficult to remove without re-flocking. The panel deformation will often cause pressure
points and 'rub marks' on the horse's back, thus
causing saddle fitting problems, which are often not easily diagnosed.
Careful storage of an expensive saddle is important!!
